Childhood Cancer Awareness Video: Do You Know What the Gold Ribbon Stands For?

For this self-initiated project, I created a video during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (September) to both raise awareness and conduct primary research. I centered the project around a simple but powerful question: “Do you know what the gold ribbon stands for?”

Throughout the month, I approached individuals and asked them this question on camera. The majority were unaware that the gold ribbon represents childhood cancer, highlighting a significant gap in public awareness. In contrast, I observed that most people immediately recognized the meaning of the pink ribbon, reinforcing the disparity in visibility between causes. This project aimed to both document that gap and actively educate participants in real time.

This experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone, as initiating conversations with strangers required confidence and adaptability. Through this process, I strengthened my communication skills and became more comfortable engaging with diverse audiences. I independently filmed, directed, and edited the entire video, developing both my storytelling and technical production abilities.

I am especially proud of this project because it combines personal passion with purposeful impact. Looking ahead, I would love to expand this concept into a larger-scale awareness campaign that continues to educate and spark conversation.
